Critical Partners Coaching™

A Strengths Now® Coaching Engagement

For Times When A Relationship Is Too Important To Fail.

When stakes are high and critical parters are a lynchpin for business success, don’t leave a collaborative relationship to chance.

Strengths Now® created Critical Partners Coaching™, a structured joint coaching engagement that gives two leaders a shared, research-backed language for understanding their differences and building on them with intention.

When that relationship is working, both leaders are more effective, decisions move faster, and the team around them feels it.

Sometimes The Working Relationship Is The Work.

Two People. One Shared Goal.

Critical Partners Coaching™ is designed for two people in the same organization whose success is linked to one another and who understand their working relationship has a meaningful impact on business outcomes. It is a structured, joint engagement that delivers a customized collaboration plan for leveraging each leader's strengths and navigating their differences productively.

When To Consider Critical Partners Coaching™

A new incoming leader

A new hire, a promotion, or a restructured reporting relationship needs to start on the right foot.

Working together on a high stakes goal

Two people need to work more effectively together to reach an outcome neither can deliver alone.

Recurring friction

Repeated conflicts or misunderstandings are slowing progress, draining energy, and affecting the team.

After a shift in responsibilities

A working partnership needs to be rebuilt on clearer, more productive terms.

A new reporting relationship

One leader has been promoted above a former peer and the relationship needs to be reset.

As part of succession planning

A leader and their identified successor need to work in close, intentional partnership.

How We Decide If Critical Partner Coaching™ is the Right Aproach

Our Intake Process

Critical Partners Coaching™ works best when both people are in good standing, genuinely motivated to improve their working relationship, and willing to engage honestly in the process. It is not appropriate for every situation, and part of our value is helping you determine that before the engagement begins.

Before any engagement starts, we conduct a thorough intake conversation to understand the partnership, its history, and how each person is experiencing the dynamics.

When the fit is right, Critical Partners Coaching™ can be genuinely transformational.

If not, we will tell you and help point you toward the right resource.

Our Critical Partners Coaching™ is not appropriate when:

  • One leader manages the other and there are unresolved performance or conduct concerns that are better supported through Human Resources
  • One or both leaders are on a performance improvement plan or under formal HR review
  • The process is not voluntary
  • A situation involves conduct, compliance, or legal concerns that require HR or legal involvement.
  • A conflict has escalated to a point where formal mediation by a neutral third party is the more appropriate first step

Critical Partners Coaching™ Methodology

Clifton Strengths. Mediation. Collaboration.

A holistic Approach

CliftonStrengths is a trusted assessment that reveals our most natural way of thinking, feeling, and behaving. We use it as the foundation for Critical Partners Coaching™because it provides a common language for exploring relationship dynamics. By mapping each person's talent profile side by side, we can explore work style preferences and differences — and new opportunities for collaboration.

In cases where tension exists, we can better understand how differing strengths may be at play. Most workplace conflicts are experienced as personality clashes. Critical Partners Coaching™ helps reframe that. What feels personal is often strengths friction — people with different dominant themes approach decisions, communication, and risk in fundamentally different ways.

Drawing on principles from mediation and collaboration best practices, we create the structured, neutral space honest conversations require. Both voices are heard equally. Together we build a customized collaboration plan for leveraging each leader's strengths and navigating their differences productively.

When Strengths Collide: A Critical Partners Story

The friction: Maya moves at the speed of an idea. Daniel slows down when others speed up. This tempo mismatch was frustrating both of them to the point they stopped communicating directly. A shared project was slipping and the team felt it.

The insight: Our coaching introduced strengths mapping which provided a blameless language for what was happening. Maya's speed (Activator) left Daniel without what he needed to commit. Daniel's caution (Deliberative) without a defined window, read to Maya as distrust. Both were doing exactly what their strengths wired them to do. The problem wasn't their differences. It was that no one had ever helped them name those differences out loud.

The shift: In joint coaching sessions, they explored the specific moments where the tension had surfaced and started talking about what each of them actually needed. They negotiated a new rhythm — with clear handoffs and agreed on when to move and when to wait.

The outcome: What started as friction turned out to be differing strengths waiting to be understood. Critical Partners Coaching™ untangled the interpersonal dynamics to find new collaboration strategies, while honoring each person’s unique strengths. Back on track and working in concert,  they appreciated how differing strengths offered a  strong check-and-balance to shared work.

How It Works

The Critical Partners Engagement Structure

Engagements can be a few sessions or more involved over four to six months combining individual and joint coaching in a deliberate sequence. Participants always complete a pre-questionnaire or have an individual session before the work formally begins as part of our intake process.

Overlapping circles, each with one of three words: individual sessions, between-session learning, and joint sessions.

Individual Sessions

Each participant meets separately with the coach to complete their CliftonStrengths debrief, review their own workstyle preferences, and begin to explore how their natural strengths land on others. This creates a foundation of insight and self-awareness. The coach will often recommend a strength-specific reflection or resources for deeper exploration.

Joint Sessions

Both partners meet together with the coach to review our analysis of both strengths profiles and look for areas of overlap and differences which adds a fresh lens on the relationship. The coach helps guide conversation about how the work gets done, expectations and concrete strategies to maximize the differences. A skilled coach is a neutral party who creates the structure and safety necessary for honest and productive dialogue.

Between-Session Learning

Both leaders are encouraged to experiment with new behaviors between sessions — trying a different approach in a meeting, noticing a pattern, tracking what shifts. Those experiments become the material for the next session. The coach may also recommend specific assignments in between sessions to be completed jointly, or separately.

What Changes

Outcomes

A successful Critical Partners engagement produces something specific and measurable: two people who understand each other’s strengths, have a shared language for their differences, and know how to use those differences as an advantage rather than an obstacle. In practice that looks like faster decisions, fewer repeated conflicts, more effective communication, and a working relationship that models healthy collaboration for everyone watching.

  • Faster decision making.
  • Less tension, conflict or avoidance.
  • A collaboration shift that is visible to others.
  • Honest appreciation of differing work styles.
  • Greater accountability and follow through.
  • More productive meetings.

What Our Clients Are Saying

In their words

“Through the work, I was able to identify the main themes that shape our interpersonal dynamics at work, giving me a new perspective on how to collaborate more effectively with my colleague.”

– Critical Partners
Coaching Participant

“Seeing our strengths side-by-side was really revealing. Usually, we learn about colleagues through trial and error over time. This process helped us avoid all that so we could just get right to work. We both learned about each other and had immediate ideas about how to leverage our different strengths.”

– CEO, Biotech Start Up

“I engaged Strengths Now to work with two of my most talented staff who were struggling to find the most impactful way they could work together, lead their own teams, and maximize the effectiveness of that leadership. The outcome was exactly what I had hoped.”
